Cienan is a Yorta Yorta & Ngarrindjeri man from Naarm (Melbourne).
Cienan has been apart of and hosted numerous panels on Indigenous popculture and representation, a highlights of which were hosting a panel looking at the ABC Indigenous Sci-Fi series ‘Cleverman’ with the head writer and actors from it.
The other, being on the same panel with the first ever illustrator of Wonder Woman! Cienan is Director of the first Indigenous Comic Con in Australia, delivered in 2019, a pop culture event focusing on the creativity of Indigenous cultures from Australia and New Zealand from comic books and video games to cosplay and music. In that same year he created Indiginerd, a pop culture focused shop and events company, a platform creating space for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander creativity and geekiness.
At Awesome Black we don’t like to talk about the deficit that First Nations people have gone through, we don’t like to talk about the history of government failures and the effects they have had on our communities. We recognise that they have happened, but we want to talk about what we can do right now to get things moving forward for us, by us.
At Awesome Black we are attempting to create a system where wealth stays in our communities and we can build up Blakenomics, supporting each other’s businesses and community. At every point when we buy something we think… can we buy this from a First Nations person, if the answer is yes we do it, if the answer is no… we ask more questions. Why not? And how do we make sure that we can in the future?
